Why is my house cold and my heating bill so high?
Home insulation in Bismarck, ND means finding where your house loses heat, sealing those gaps and adding insulation where it's thin, so your rooms stay warmer through the winter and the furnace isn't fighting a draft.
Most people who call me have a bedroom that won't warm up, a room over the garage that's cold all winter or a power bill that keeps climbing, and they aren't sure if the trouble is the attic, the walls or the floor. The price mostly turns on how big the space is, how easy it is to get into, how many gaps need sealing, which method we use and whether old insulation has to come out first. The schedule turns on how much prep the job needs and whether the city wants a permit. After I look the space over with you, you get a written estimate that says what we'd do and why.
Is home insulation the right fix for your house?
Rooms that never warm up
If one bedroom or the room over the garage stays cold, heat is usually leaking around it.
Icicles and ice dams
Heavy icicles along the eaves usually mean attic heat is melting the snow on your roof.
A climbing heating bill
When the bill climbs every winter without a change in habits, the house is usually leaking air.
Cold floors over crawl spaces
Floors that feel cold under your socks often sit over a crawl space with little or no insulation.
How we handle home insulation
When you're not sure where to start, I look at the whole house and point out where the heat is getting away, then we build the plan around the spots that pay off. In most houses that's the attic, and the goal there is a ceiling that's sealed tight and well insulated under an attic that still breathes. So we start with attic air sealing, closing the gaps around the hatch, pipes, wires and light fixtures, because insulation can't stop a draft on its own. Then we keep the eave vents clear so moisture can still get out, and we lay the insulation full depth all the way to the edges, where it's usually thinnest. I'll also walk you through blown-in, loose fill we blow through a hose, versus batts, the precut blankets, so you know what you're paying for.
Two other jobs often go with this one. If the old insulation was soaked by a roof leak or is full of droppings, laying new material over it just buries the problem, so we'd plan insulation removal first. If your cold floors sit over a crawl space, crawl space insulation is usually what warms up the rooms downstairs.
Sealing plus blown-in
This suits most attics, where the space is open and the ductwork doesn't run through it. Sealing stops the air, the loose fill covers evenly around joists and wires, and it usually costs less than foam.
Spray foam where it earns its cost
Foam costs more, but it seals air and insulates in one pass, so I recommend it when your ducts live in the attic or for tight spots like rim joists and the room over the garage. Closed-cell foam, the dense kind that also blocks moisture, is the one we reach for in damp areas.
What happens when you call about insulating your Bismarck home?
Call or send the form
Tell us what you're noticing, like a cold bedroom, drafts or ice along the eaves, and we'll set up a time for me to come out to the house.
Look over the house together
I go through the attic and the other trouble spots with you, take photos and explain what I found, what should be fixed first and what can wait. Then I send a written estimate that says what we'd do and why, so you can see where your money goes before you decide anything.
Pick a start date
Once you're ready, we pick a day to start. If your job needs a permit, the city approves the application before it issues one and review times vary, so that wait comes first.
Seal, insulate, then walk through
We take care of any problems first and seal the gaps before new insulation goes in. When we're done, I walk you through the finished work before we pack up.
Is the home insulation you have enough?
Sometimes it is, and I'll tell you.
Before I suggest adding anything, I measure how many inches are already up there and check whether it runs full depth out to the edges, where it's usually thinnest. In older houses it has often settled or been pushed around, but plenty of attics just need their gaps sealed.
If your insulation is deep and even, I'll say so and point you to whatever is actually letting heat out, which might be the hatch, a crawl space or nothing worth paying to fix. You should know why we'd do something before you decide it's worth the money.

I taught myself how houses lose heat, then learned the hands-on side one attic and crawl space at a time. It's why I'd rather tell you your insulation is fine than sell you more of it.

Questions about insulating your home
How much does attic insulation cost in Bismarck?
Attic insulation in Bismarck usually costs about $1,400 to $4,700 per job, which is what the work runs in the area, not a quote from us. Where yours lands depends on the size of the attic, how much sealing it needs, whether old insulation comes out and which method is used. I'll give you your own number in a written estimate after I look at the space.
Should air sealing come before insulation?
Yes. Money spent on insulation can be wasted if the holes and gaps in your ceilings, walls and foundation aren't sealed first, so you get more out of your budget when sealing is part of the plan from the start.
What is the best way to insulate an attic, blown-in or batts?
For most attics, blown-in loose fill, whether fiberglass, rock wool or cellulose, is usually less expensive than batts and covers better, because it fills in around joists, wires and odd corners. Prices vary by method, so when you compare quotes, ask which method each one assumes.
What causes ice dams on houses in Bismarck?
Ice dams form only when there's snow on the roof, freezing temperatures and an attic that's poorly sealed or poorly insulated, all at the same time. You can't do much about Bismarck's snow or cold, but the attic is the part that sealing and insulation can change.
Can a low-income household in Bismarck get help paying for insulation?
Yes, Burleigh County households are served by Region VII of the state weatherization program, which you can reach at 701-258-2240. Household income can't be more than 200% of the poverty level, and households already on LIHEAP qualify automatically. Each home is served once, unless it was weatherized more than fifteen years ago.
Do I have to leave the house while my attic is insulated?
Usually not for sealing and blown-in work, since we're up in the attic and you can go about your day below. Spray foam is different, because the foam maker sets a re-entry time, when people and pets can come back inside, and we'll tell you what it is for your job before we start.
Want to know where your heat goes?
I'll look the space over with you and send a written estimate that says what we'd do and why.

The Bismarck Building Inspections Department handles permits in the city and in the extra-territorial area around it, and construction isn't allowed to begin without a permit. Whether an insulation job like yours needs one is the department's call, so before work starts we check with that office. When it does call for a permit, we handle the application and wait for it to be issued before we begin.
We're based in Bismarck and work in Mandan and other cities around it. On jobs in Bismarck and Mandan we keep finding older attics with insulation that's settled thin and gaps around the hatch and light fixtures that were never sealed, which is why I look before I quote.
